What is ATV insurance?

New Hampshire is a great state for using all-terrain vehicles, but everyone who gets on one of these must be aware of the inherent risks. Four-wheeling safely requires obeying the rules of the trail, adhering to safety practices, and wearing helmets. It’s often also a good idea for New Hampshire ATV owners to have ATV insurance.

ATV insurance is tailored for the risks that come with owning and operating four-wheelers. Policies typically can cover the four-wheeler, the owner and any passengers.

Who in New Hampshire might benefit from four-wheeler insurance?

Most New Hampshire residents who own ATVs, four-wheelers or similar off-road vehicles should consider four-wheeler insurance. It’s generally not required by state law, but can be extremely helpful.

In cases where owners have leased or financed their ATV, comprehensive and collision coverage might be required by the terms of the agreement. Many lenders stipulate that these coverages be in place so that the lender is protected if the ATV is destroyed.

What types of coverages are available in four-wheeler policies?

Four-wheeler insurance policies typically include a variety of coverages, mirroring many protections found in traditional auto insurance. Some of the more common coverages include:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): May cover injuries to operators and riders on the insured ATV when it’s in use.
  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: May cover injuries to those not on the insured ATV that result from an accident with the ATV.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: May cover non-accident damage to the ATV, such as damage from falling objects, fire, vandalism or theft.
  • Collision Coverage: May cover accident damage to the ATV, should the ATV collide with another ATV or a road vehicle.
  • Accessory Coverage: May cover damage to or loss of accessories like helmets, trailers and aftermarket parts.
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage: May cover damage to other ATVs or property resulting from accidents.
  • Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage: May cover accidents involving other ATVs whose owner doesn’t carry sufficient insurance.

While many of these coverages resemble those in car insurance, they’re specifically designed to cater to the risks associated with ATVs.

Is homeowners insurance a suitable alternative for ATV coverage?

Some homeowners insurance policies might offer some degree of ATV coverage, potentially covering damage to the ATV, injuries from ATV-related accidents, and other related risks.

Before relying upon a homeowners policy, however, ATV owners should review their homeowners policy with an insurance agent who specializes in ATV coverage. Not all homeowners policies provide coverage, and those that do might give only limited protection.

A specialized agent will be able to recommend coverage based on an ATV owner’s particular homeowners policy and four-wheeler insurance needs.

Is it possible to cancel an ATV policy during the off-season?

During non-use periods, such as winter months for many, some ATV owners may contemplate canceling their insurance policy. However, total cancellation isn’t generally recommended.

Total cancellation can leave an ATV unprotected against vandalism, theft, fire, falling debris or similar perils. If an ATV were damaged while in storage, there’d likely be no recourse through insurance.

Instead of entirely canceling a policy, owners might consider adjusting their coverages. This can result in lower premiums while still maintaining the necessary protections for when the ATV is in storage. Any adjusted coverages can be reset once the ATV is taken out for use again.

If making coverage adjustments for off-season storage, owners should consult a qualified insurance agent. An agent can make sure critical protections remain in place during the off-season, and may remember to remind the owner that coverages should be reinstated before using the ATV next season.
